    Subprime

A category of borrowers with weak credit, typically FICO scores below 620.

    What It Means

Subprime lending carries higher rates, larger fees, and tighter terms. Subprime mortgages played a central role in the 2008 financial crisis, leading to substantial regulatory reform. Today, subprime credit is more cautiously underwritten but remains widely available for cards, auto loans, and personal loans.
