This resource is growing
This is the first version of the UseYourCredit.com AI Costs & Value Center. We are building a larger resource that will include expanded tool comparisons, additional pricing data, cost calculators, subscription-planning tools, historical pricing information and more detailed guidance. Pricing, plans, usage limits and product features can change, so always confirm current information directly with the provider before making a purchase or financial decision.
How AI pricing works
AI products charge in several different ways. Understanding which model a service uses is the first step to comparing costs fairly.
Free plans
Often include limited usage, reduced model access, slower responses, fewer exports, watermarks, restricted commercial use, or lower monthly allowances. Useful for evaluation.
Monthly & annual subscriptions
Provide access to a defined collection of features or usage limits. A consumer subscription does not always include API access.
Usage-based pricing
Charges scale with consumption — tokens processed, audio generated, images created, compute time, or API requests.
Credit-based pricing
Credits are provider-defined units tied to actions or generations. Credits have no universal value and cannot be compared directly across unrelated platforms.
Seat-based business pricing
Team and business products may charge per user, per seat, or under a broader enterprise agreement.
Enterprise pricing
May include security, admin controls, compliance, SLAs, higher limits, and negotiated pricing.
AI credits vs. tokens
"Credit" and "token" are two of the most misunderstood terms in AI billing. They mean different things — and one provider's credit is never equal to another's.
Tokens
- A token is a small unit of text processed by certain AI systems.
- Tokens may represent portions of words, complete short words, punctuation or other text elements.
- Input tokens are provided to a model; output tokens are generated by a model.
- Some companies charge different rates for input and output tokens.
- Context-window size is not the same as a monthly usage allowance.
Credits
- A credit is a provider-defined unit representing a prompt, task, generation, edit, minute, image or other activity.
- Credits from different companies are not equivalent.
- One Lovable credit is not equal to one ElevenLabs, Replit or Cursor credit.
- Subscription credits and API tokens should not be treated as interchangeable.
- "Unlimited" services may still use rate limits or fair-use restrictions.
Takeaway: The word "credit" does not have one standard value across the AI industry. Always review what a provider counts as a billable action.
AI tool comparison
This introductory comparison focuses on how each service charges rather than declaring one tool universally "best." The right value depends on the user's workload, required features and actual usage.

How much should you budget for AI?
Free or nearly free
Students, casual users, evaluators
Combine legitimate free tiers while watching for usage limits and upgrade prompts. Free plans change frequently.
Under $25 / month
Individuals needing one primary tool
Often better to pay for one strong general assistant than to stack several overlapping subscriptions.
Under $75 / month
Freelancers, creators, developers, small-business owners
Typical stack: one primary assistant plus one specialist tool (voice, code, or image).
Under $150 / month
Agencies, heavier users, small teams
Combines writing, coding, research, and audio/image tools. Watch for overlap and inactive seats.
These are general planning ranges, not fixed recommendations. The appropriate amount depends on whether the tools save enough time, create enough revenue or improve enough work to justify their cost.

How to avoid wasting money on AI tools
Common waste patterns
- Paying for several tools that perform substantially similar functions.
- Keeping subscriptions that are rarely used.
- Buying annual plans before testing the service.
- Choosing the highest tier without needing its limits.
- Assuming a consumer subscription includes API usage.
- Forgetting about metered API charges.
- Failing to set available spending limits or alerts.
- Allowing free trials to renew unintentionally.
- Ignoring foreign transaction fees or currency conversion.
- Failing to document business-related software expenses.
- Paying for team seats that are inactive.
- Confusing promotional allowances with permanent plan benefits.
- Evaluating price without measuring time saved or useful output.
Before you subscribe
- Identify the exact task the tool must perform.
- Check whether a current subscription already performs that task.
- Test the free plan when available.
- Review cancellation and renewal terms.
- Confirm whether usage limits fit your workload.
- Estimate the monthly and annual cost.
- Measure whether the tool saves time or creates financial value.
- Reassess the subscription regularly.
Can you invest in AI companies?
- Some AI products are operated by publicly traded companies.
- Some leading AI companies are privately held and cannot ordinarily be purchased directly through a public brokerage account.
- Investors may obtain indirect AI exposure through software companies, semiconductor companies, cloud providers, data-center businesses, infrastructure providers or diversified funds.
- A widely used AI product is not automatically a good investment.
- Investment outcomes depend on valuation, competition, profitability, regulation, capital requirements and execution.
- Thematic AI investments can create concentration risk.
- Public-company relationships with private AI businesses do not necessarily provide direct or exclusive exposure.
