    Dispute

A formal challenge to a charge or credit report entry.

    What It Means

Cardholders can dispute transactions with their issuer under the Fair Credit Billing Act, usually within 60 days of the statement date. Credit-report disputes go through the bureau under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, which requires investigation within 30 days. Both processes are free and should be supported with documentation.
