    Credit Report Dispute

    A formal request to a credit bureau to investigate and correct inaccurate information.

    What It Means

    Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, bureaus must investigate disputes within 30 days (45 days if additional documentation is submitted). Disputes can be filed by mail or online with each bureau. The bureau contacts the data furnisher; if not verified, the disputed item must be corrected or removed.
