    Statute of Limitations

The legal time period during which a creditor can sue to collect a debt.

    What It Means

Statutes of limitations vary by state (typically 3 to 10 years) and by debt type. After the statute expires, the debt is 'time-barred' and the creditor cannot win a lawsuit-but the debt may still be reported and collection attempts may continue. Making a partial payment can sometimes reset the clock.
