    Returned Payment Fee

A charge applied when a payment to a credit account is rejected by the issuing bank.

    What It Means

If a credit card or loan payment bounces due to insufficient funds, closed account, or other reasons, the lender typically assesses a returned payment fee-often around $25 to $40. The original payment is also undone, which can trigger late-payment consequences if not resolved before the due date. Some issuers waive the first returned payment as a courtesy.
