    Principal

The original amount borrowed or the remaining balance excluding interest and fees.

    What It Means

Principal is the core debt amount on any loan or credit account. Loan payments are split between principal and interest; early in an amortized loan, most of each payment goes to interest, gradually shifting toward principal. Making extra principal payments accelerates payoff and reduces total interest paid over the life of the loan. On credit cards, the principal is the balance of purchases and fees, separate from accrued finance charges.
