What It Means
Since the CARD Act of 2009, issuers may charge an overlimit fee only if the cardholder has opted in to allow over-limit transactions. Without opt-in, transactions that would exceed the limit are simply declined. The fee, when permitted, cannot exceed the amount of the over-limit transaction and is capped at one fee per billing cycle. Most consumers benefit from leaving opt-in disabled.
