    Jumbo Loan

A mortgage larger than the conforming loan limit set annually by the FHFA.

    What It Means

Jumbo loans require stronger credit (often 700+), larger down payments (often 10% to 20%), and more reserves than conforming loans. They cannot be sold to Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac, so lenders typically keep them on their books or sell to private investors. Rates may be similar to or slightly higher than conforming loans.
