    Finance Charge

The total cost of borrowing in a given billing cycle, including interest and applicable fees.

    What It Means

Finance charges represent the dollar amount of credit cost on a statement. For credit cards, finance charges are usually calculated using the average daily balance method multiplied by the periodic rate. Carrying a balance from month to month is what generates finance charges; cardholders who pay in full during the grace period avoid them entirely on purchases. Cash advances and balance transfers often accrue finance charges immediately, with no grace period.
